BIELSKO-BIALA, POLAND
SEPTEMBER 5-6, 2008
University of Bielsko-Biala
Institute of General Linguistics and Methodology of Humanities Research,
is pleased to announce the organization of an international conference
Semantic conceptions of case in Slavic languages.
The conference will take place in Bielsko-Biala, Sept. 5-6, 2008.
The venue will be the University of Bielsko-Biala, ul. Willowa 2.
We kindly invite all linguists investigating the semantics of cases working within different theoretical frameworks; however, we particularly wish to encourage those linguists who represent the cognitive approach to participate in this conference.
Dear friends and colleagues,
Cognitive linguistics offers - in our opinion - a suitable theoretical and methodological foundation for the investigation of case since it regards case as a semantic category which serves to express various kinds of semantic and conceptual relation. In many European languages cases have a morphological exponent (a changing inflectional ending); in others they may be expressed by prepositions, which have entirely replaced inflectional endings, or which express the relations together with endings. It is also important to consider the problem of grammatical recategorization, whereby prepositions become bound affixes or verbal particles (as in English).
